STEM Scholars Showcase Summer Research Project

Each summer, STEM Scholars at the Franklin Institute participate in four weeks of intensive STEM education, combining hands-on learning with real-world research experiences. This year, rising sophomores and juniors conducted in-depth research, gathering and analyzing data on a range of timely topics, including algorithm auditing and artificial intelligence, gene editing, app development, and the impact of sugar-sweetened beverages on diabetes rates.
On July 31, the students presented their research and findings at the STEM Scholars Summer Showcase. Family members, friends, industry professionals, Franklin Institute staff, and invited guests gathered to view the presentations, engage with the students, and ask questions about their research. The students demonstrated impressive knowledge and confidence as they thoughtfully presented their findings and responded to questions from the audience.
The Summer Showcase is designed to mirror the real-world research process and the trial-and-error nature of STEM fields, giving students the opportunity to explore complex questions, analyze data, and communicate their findings to an audience.
The Franklin Institute STEM Scholars Program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to succeed in college and beyond. Through hands-on workshops, academic enrichment, exposure to a broad range of STEM industries, professional development, entrepreneurial and internship opportunities, ACT preparation, college essay coaching, and comprehensive college and career readiness support, students are prepared to pursue their goals in STEM and beyond. Workshops are led by professionals from leading STEM industries, universities, and hospitals throughout the Philadelphia region.
STEM Scholars make a four-year commitment to rigorous STEM enrichment, driven by their passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program includes weekly after-school sessions throughout the academic year, complemented by four weeks of immersive summer programming that challenges students to explore, innovate, and apply their skills in meaningful ways.
